Research shows that those with high level skills (degrees and postgraduate qualifications) are more likely to be employed and to earn higher salaries compared to those with the next highest qualification.
The contribution that the HE sector makes to developing a skilled workforce in Wales is well-recognised. A highly skilled workforce is key to ensuring that Wales becomes a stronger and more prosperous nation. The analytical and communication skills possessed by graduates are valued by employers and are becoming increasingly important. Evidence suggests that people with postgraduate qualifications are the most likely to become entrepreneurs and wealth creators.
The importance of high level skills to Wales’s prosperity has been stressed by the cross party House of Commons Welsh Affairs Committee. Their May 2009 report on Globalisation and its impact on Wales said “An increase in higher level skills amongst the Welsh population is the only way in which the nation can compete successfully for jobs against other countries, where lower wages are the norm…Wales must avoid the trap of a `low skills equilibrium` and dependence on low skilled, low paid jobs, which are vulnerable to relocation worldwide”.
Employers look to universities to provide high quality training for their staff. Recent figures show that 225,000 learner days of continuous professional development are offered by universities in Wales with most offering courses in the place of work. The HE sector agrees with the latest Annual Report of the Wales Employment and Skills Board which argued that effective engagement with employers and improved leadership and management training is crucial for the success of the Welsh economy.
