Open University in Wales
What we do

As the voice of higher education in Wales, HEW represents its members in a number of ways. HEW is the key liaison point for Welsh Assembly Government officials and officers of the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales on higher education issues.

Role : Representation and Negotiation

The HEW Directorate has observer status on key Higher Education Funding Council for Wales subcommittees and the Boards of the Wales International Consortium and Welsh Higher Education Brussels.

HEW negotiates on behalf of the university sector in Wales in relation, for example, to the Student Loans Company on the administration of some bursaries in Wales.

HEW ensures that the higher education sector is represented fully within the structures of Universities UK, and in UK-wide decision-making bodies.

HEW represents the HE sector in Wales on the Board of the Quality Assurance Agency and on the boards of UK HE sector agencies such as the Higher Education Statistics Agency, the Universities and Colleges Admission Service and the Universities and Colleges Employers Association.

The HEW Directorate represents the university sector on the Programming Monitoring Committee for the EU Convergence and Competitiveness Programmes.

HEW serves as a liaison point between sector-wide networks and associations within Wales and Vice-Chancellors.

The HEW Director is a member of the Universities UK Strategic Leadership Team.
